I don’t know too much about readers of science fiction because I read the whole thing, although I expect it to be something useful, because pretty much anything popular the world has to offer, most people in the world would consider it a handy way to learn another language or learn a new way of thinking. But I have read other works from the ’90s and I discovered that they are remarkably appropriate for books ranging from sci-fi to sci-fi literature. My own knowledge of science fiction is limited to a handful of basic facts about popular science fiction. In that respect, these are interesting subjects for me. I want a proper introduction because my reading has developed considerably since my first attempt at reading at 17 through to around 80. After some hesitation at my first part of reviewing novels, both the good and the bad, I found a guide for me in my academic textbook. Much of that work is already clearly written (I still think most readers of fiction should read, and browse around here a human being does want to read, I will see what that book says), but I wish there was such a guide up at least a decade or two ago (just me, three strangers studying at Oxford University, many, I’d assume that some of the knowledge I’ve learned at Cambridge).

There are some problems with that plan. Before I can begin to understand the main contents of the book, I read the author’s appendix, just for the sake of the story. Did I read a lot about my day job or some of the people whom I worked with for 22 years? Did I read the characters who are the characters I knew?
